Gr2 ASTM B338 Welded Titanium Tube Description
ASTM B338 is the spec for welded and seamless titanium tube used in condensers and heat exchangers. Gr2 ASTM B338 Welded Titanium Tube is Grade 2 material. Grade 2 is what most people use in these applications. It's strong enough. It welds without trouble. It doesn't pit in seawater. It doesn't rust. It just sits there and works.
Welded tube starts as strip. Rolled into a tube. Welded down the seam. Then the weld gets annealed so it's not brittle. For condenser work, welded tube does the same job as seamless. Costs less. That's why so many plants use it.
Seamless costs more because the process is slower. Tolerances are looser. For thin wall exchanger tubes, welded is often the better option. ASTM B338 requires the weld to be tested. Eddy current or ultrasonic. No defects allowed.

Process of Gr2 ASTM B338 Welded Titanium Tube
Tube-to-tubesheet welding. Use ERTi-2 filler. Purge the tube with argon. Weld color tells you everything. Silver or light straw is good. Blue or purple means bad shielding. White or grey is contamination.
Roller expansion. Grade 2 work-hardens. Use controlled rolling pressure. Too light and the tube leaks. Too heavy and the tube end cracks.
U-bends. Mandrel bender. Grade 2 bends fine. Minimum radius depends on wall thickness.
Testing per ASTM B338
Every tube gets hydro tested. Samples from each lot get flattened and flared. The weld seam gets eddy current or ultrasonic inspection. Reports go with the shipment. Heat number traceable. EN 10204 3.1 standard. 3.2 if your spec asks for it.
