Why titanium for sternal wires 

 

Sternal wires stay in the chest forever. Patient may need MRI later. Steel wires cause artifact. Titanium wires don't.

Steel has nickel. Some patients react. Titanium has none.

Titanium wire ties differently than nylon or silk. It doesn't stretch. It holds the knot.

Grade 1 titanium is easier to tie than Grade 23 ELI. Grade 1 is softer. Grade 23 ELI is springier. Practice required.

Sternal wire technique 

 

Pass wire around sternum using a curved needle or passer. Both ends come out. Twist using a wire twister. 3-4 twists. Cut ends. Push twist flat against bone.

Wire must not break during twisting. Must not loosen after cutting.
